On April 13th, the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival opens and I can hardly wait!
There are a lot of exciting events to look forward to, including world premieres and restored classics.
I’ll wait on my reviews until after it’s over, but expect a few in-depth articles about some of the more interesting debuts. TIGER RAID, directed and co-written by Simon Dixon, promises wartime thrills in a story about mercenaries on a covert mission in Iraq. Directing his first feature, Dixon has had extensive experience directing TV commercials.
Another promising entry is the darkly comic MOTHER, directed by Kadri Koussar. Set in a small town in Estonia, it centers on a woman, Elsa, who is caretaker for her comatose son. The boy had been shot under mysterious circumstances, and the locals are abuzz with rumors. Maybe Elsa knows something, but isn’t telling.
MOTHER is Kousaar’s third feature. She received international attention when her debut film, MAGNUS, was shown at Cannes in 2007.
I also hope to preview THE LONER, director Daniel Grove’s debut feature. This “neo-noir”, set in contemporary Los Angeles, follows a former mobster who is haunted by memories of being a child soldier in Iran in the 1980s.
But there are too many banquet dishes to sample in only 14 days. Stay tuned.
