This my first posting on WordPress, and I just want to see how it looks.  I’ve been on blogger for a couple of years, and eventually I’ll import the whole collection here.

This blog should connect somehow to my job board website – interpretersgroup.com – but I’ll continue to discuss topics that interest me. Like the law.

Just today, for instance, the NYT had an article about the stipulated settlement of a federal lawsuit against Westchester County which alleged the county’s housing discrimination against minorities.  The county agreed to build hundreds of moderately priced housing units and to promote them “aggressively” to blacks and Hispanics.

Although this sets no legal precedent – because the county never admitted the charges, and only agreed to the government’s terms to end the lawsuit – the Times has high hopes for it anyway:

“The settlement could serve as a model for the Obama administration to    challenge the actions of county governments that have resisted pressure to undo decades of patterns of residential segregation.”

Ha!  Don’t hold your breath.  Based on what we’ve seen so far, do you think that Obama and Holder want to march their forces into that territory?  We’ll see a new constitution in Afghanistan before we get another “settlement” like Westchester!  And the longer they wait, the worse it’s going to look.  You better believe that this “settlement” will be returned to the court when the Justice Department sees how expeditiously these housing units are built.  Let me see…when do they have those local elections again?
